January 8,2015 Meeting
Guest Speaker : David Booz
Ranked as a top amateur shooter since 1846 Hiram Berdan , proposed to Sec. Of War Edwin M. Stanton the idea of a corp of handpicked marksmen at the beginning of the war. They would be the best men armed with the best rifles available at that time. By November of 1861 Berdan was made a Colonel and 2 regiments of U.S. Sharpshooters had been formed. At Gettysburg the Sharpshooters help delay and slow down the Confederate attack on July 2nd. Of the 2,570 men over 1,000 would be killed or wounded during the war. On Thursday, January 8, 2015, David Booz will discuss the history of Berdan’s Sharpshooters at 7 pm in room 219 of the Cade Building.
